Over the last few years, vaping has received many votes of confidence from organisations such as Public Health England, Cancer Research UK and many more regarding how effective it is to help smokers kick their habit.
According to Public Health England, 20,00 smokers switch to vaping every year, reducing the risk of health issues that go hand in hand with smoking. However, despite the fantastic statistics that come out of these organisations, it’s clear that there are still mixed feelings when it comes down to vaping as a better alternative to smoking.
How many times have you been scrolling through Facebook to find a terrifying news headline such as ‘Vapers are twice as likely to get cancer’? Such misinformed articles cause a frenzy of panic, with multiple individuals frantically tagging friends and begging them to chuck their vapes in the bin. The real issue here is education – those who aren’t aware of how e-cigarettes work or the ingredients that go into e-liquid will take their information from news sources, no matter where the underlying facts have come from.
There is also a lot of scaremongering regarding diacetyl and ‘popcorn lung’, and how this is a common ingredient in e-liquid. Contrary to this, the ingredient diacetyl which was commonly used in dessert flavoured e-liquid was banned under the TPD in May 2016. All reputable e-liquid manufacturers would not use this ingredient in their products – which is why 888 Vapour will only buy e-liquids from manufacturers who ensure each product is thoroughly tested before sale.
VApril, an annual campaign run in association with UKVIA, began in 2018 as a way to educate the public on the facts of vaping, and how many can kick their habit to the curb. The campaign partners with many big brands within the e-cigarette industry, running masterclasses across the country for those who would like to give vaping a go.
Participants are encouraged to share their stories across social media, and let the world know how they are getting on with their VApril Challenge. Ultimately, smokers are asked to try vaping for the whole of April to see if they can kick the habit.
The campaign is backed by VApril’s own ambassador, Dr Christian Jessen – most well known for his part in the Embarrassing Bodies TV show. He states:
“I believe vaping has overwhelming potential to help smokers make the switch, which matters because stopping smoking is the single most significant step that people can make to improve their health. I’m proud to speak up for vaping this VApril.”
3 million smokers have already successfully transitioned from smoking to vaping, and having such a huge campaign to advocate for the benefits is a huge step in British public health.
